Jan. 6 hearing live updates: Chairman says committee may vote on further investigative action - The Washington Post

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol could vote to take “further investigative action,” Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.) said as its meeting got underway on Thursday. Thompson also pledged to present new evidence from Republicans to highlight actions by then-President Donald Trump that “led to an attack on a pillar of democracy.”

The panel’s vice chairwoman, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), said the committee has uncovered facts about Trump’s “state of mind” relevant to his effort to overturn the election results. She said “the central cause of January 6th was one man, Donald Trump.”

Here’s what to know

  • Cheney said the committee “may ultimately decide” to make a series of committee referrals to the Justice Department but stressed it is not the panel’s job to prosecute.
  • The committee presented evidence that Trump, just a few days after being declared the loser of the election, signed orders to immediately withdraw troops from Afghanistan and Somalia — evidence that he knew his term was going to end.
  • During a video interview played at the hearing, Vice President Mike Pence’s counsel, Greg Jacob, said some people in Trump’s White House were planning to declare victory on election night “prior to the election results being known.”
