Ten Jersey Mike’s locations, including four in New Jersey, allowed 14- and 15-year-old employees work more hours and later than is permitted by child labor laws, federal officials said.
Jersey Mike’s agreed to pay $24,660 in civil penalties to settle allegations that the sandwich shop chain let 14-and 15-year-olds work past 7 p.m. on school days, past 9 p.m. in the summer and more than three hours on school days, the U.S. Department of Labor said in a statement.
Jersey Mike’s couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
Federal investigators visited shops in Freehold, Long Branch, Neptune and Red Bank as well as other eateries in Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Oregon.
“Child labor laws exist to protect employed minors and ensure their work experience does not compromise their health, well-being, or education,” said Wage and Hour District Director Charlene Rachor in a statement. “As the number of working minors increases during the summer months, it’s a good time for employers to review their child labor policies to ensure compliance.”
Jersey Mike’s also failed to maintain proof-of-age documents for minors, all violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act’s child labor provisions, officials said.
Founded in Point Pleasant in 1956, Jersey Mike’s now has more than 2,000 locations either open or preparing to open across the country.
