False Claims and Factual Arrest
Rebekah Jones, a former Florida state employee who made false claims about the DeSantis administration hiding data on the severity of COVID-19, is now facing criticism after her son was arrested for allegedly threatening to shoot up his school. The Miami Herald changed its headline from “Florida Whistleblower Rebekah Jones’ home raided by state police” to “Son of Rebekah Jones, Florida Whistleblower, arrested in probe of threatening internet posts” after the connection between Jones and the arrest became apparent.
Threatening Internet Posts
According to the Herald, Jones’ son posted online about shooting up Holley Navarre Middle School in Florida. Among the posts were, “I want to shoot up the school,” “If I get a gun I’m gonna shoot up [Holley Navarre Middle School] lol,” and “I’m getting a wrath and natural selection shirt so maybe but I don’t think many ppl know what the Columbine shooters look like.” Jones has disputed the claim, stating that her son was quoting memes.
Allegations Against the Media
In response to the media coverage of her son’s arrest, Jones has accused the media of defaming her son and misleading the public. She alleges that the Pensacola News Journal, which did not include her in their 2022 ballot guide and falsely claimed she took a plea deal in a dismissed case, is now “jumping through hoops to justify the state taking my son.” Jones has also hinted at a potential lawsuit against the Pensacola News Journal.
