Kalamazoo assistant superintendent fired for whistleblowing, lawsuit says - MLive.com

KALAMAZOO, MI – A second Kalamazoo Public Schools employee has filed a lawsuit alleging they were fired for whistleblowing.

Jim English, assistant superintendent of finance and operations, was fired Dec. 28, by the Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Education. He filed a lawsuit March 28 in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court, alleging he was retaliated against after reporting multiple issues.

He is suing the KPS board, interim Superintendent Cindy Green, President TiAnna Harrison, Vice President Jermaine Jackson, Treasurer Tandy Moore, former trustee Ken Greschak and trustees Patti Sholler-Barber, Jennie Hill and Megan Maddock.

The lawsuit lists eight counts, including whistleblower retaliation, discharge against public policy, intentional infliction of emotional distress and violation of due process.

The district did not respond to request for comment at the time of publication.

English was fired because a district investigation found his actions were “akin to gross negligence” which raised “grave doubts” of his judgement, the district said previously. Those actions included his role in the creation of the Kalamazoo Public Schools Foundation and treatment of employees.
