Kidfluencers at Work: Navigating the Playground of Social Media Labor Laws - Law.com

Move over social media influencers and acolytes. Your 15 minutes are winding down. The cool kids on the block are now, well, kids. In today’s digital landscape, children have emerged as a significant force in the world of social media content creation. They are often referred to as “kidfluencers.” These youngsters, sometimes as young as toddlers, are the subject of creative content ranging from toy reviews to family vlogs, garnering millions of followers and lucrative brand partnerships. Notable kidfluencers like Ryan Kaji of “Ryan’s World” and Everleigh Rose LaBrant have turned childhood activities into multimillion-dollar enterprises.

Not convinced of its success? The highest grossing kid influencer is Kaji, with an estimated annual income of $30 million, and net worth more than $100 million. Kaji’s YouTube channel features him doing toy reviews, science experiments and other family-friendly content. Yes, you read that right, $100 million from doing toy reviews. However, the rapid rise of the kidfluencing phenomenon has revealed a dearth of comprehensive legal protections, leading to concerns about exploitation, financial mismanagement and labor rights violations.
