Knesset approves law banning employment of Palestinian university graduates in Israel’s education system - middleeastmonitor.com

The Israeli Knesset approved a law on Wednesday evening that bans the employment of anyone holding an academic degree from a Palestinian higher education institution in Israel’s education system. The law is seen as an exclusionary measure that targets Palestinian academics inside the 1948 territories who completed their university studies in the West Bank.

The bill, proposed by Knesset member Amit Halevi along with several coalition lawmakers, was passed in its second and third readings. It was approved by 31 votes, opposed by 10, while one member abstained.

Under the new law, amendments are introduced to the State Education Law and the Schools Supervision Law. These amendments state that anyone holding an academic degree from a higher education institution under the Palestinian Authority is to be considered as not holding the required academic qualification for employment in the education system.

As a result, such graduates are barred from working as teachers, school principals, or educational inspectors, even if they meet all other professional requirements. This effectively creates a comprehensive legal barrier to their integration into Israel’s education system.

The law includes transitional provisions that exempt certain individuals.
