Lawyer Nicholas Kaufman, counsel for former President Rodrigo Duterte, has denied online claims that the former leader was found unconscious inside his room at the International Criminal Court (ICC) detention facility in The Hague.
“I would like to state, in no uncertain terms, that the information circulating on the internet suggesting that Former President Duterte was found unconscious in his cell this morning is totally untrue,” Kaufman said in a message relayed by Vice President Sara Duterte.
“I have just spoken to him and he is stoically awaiting the judgment of the ICC Appeals Chamber on the matter of interim release,” he added.
Duterte is currently detained at the Scheveningen Prison in The Hague for alleged crimes against humanity linked to the deadly war on drugs during his tenure as Davao City mayor and later as President.
The ICC Appeals Chamber is set to deliver its ruling on Duterte’s appeal of the tribunal’s denial of his request for interim release on November 28.
According to the ICC, the decision will be delivered in open court at 10:30 a.m. in The Hague and streamed live through its official website and its Facebook and YouTube channels.
In its September 26 decision, the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber I rejected Duterte’s request for interim release.
