Lee Soo-jung, People Power Party Suwon Jeong Party Committee Chairperson and Kyunggi University Professor, who was fined 3,000,000 Korean won in the first trial for posting false information on her social media ahead of the last presidential election claiming that “the two sons of then Democratic Party of Korea presidential candidate President Lee Jae Myung received military exemptions,” has appealed.
According to the legal community on the 10th, Lee’s side submitted an appeal to the Suwon District Court on the same day. The prosecution has not yet appealed.
The 13th Criminal Division of the Suwon District Court, which presided over the first trial in this case, ruled on the 5th that Lee’s violations of the Public Official Election Act (publication of false information) and the Information and Communications Network Act (defamation) were all guilty, stating, “There is recognized indirect intent,” and sentenced her to a fine of 3,000,000 Korean won. Earlier, the prosecution had demanded a fine of 5,000,000 Korean won. If a fine of 1,000,000 Korean won or more is confirmed in an election law violation case, the right to be elected is revoked for five years, making it impossible to run for elected positions such as National Assembly member.
