Legal job market improving but ‘unpredictable’ as firms hunt for specific specialist skills - lawnews.nz

After a challenging period, New Zealand’s legal recruitment market is beginning to show green shoots, although recruiters say the recovery is uneven and highly skills driven.

Artemis Executive Recruitment managing director Kathryn Cross – one of the country’s most experienced legal recruiters with more than 25 years under her belt – describes the current environment as “unpredictable in a way we haven’t seen previously”.

“We see slight lifts and then a lull again. It hasn’t gained momentum in the way we would have expected it to,” Cross says.

“It really comes back to the economy and business confidence.”

Litigation, employment and finance lead demand

Cross says the strongest demand over the past year has been for litigation and disputes lawyers, and a growing need for employment law specialists and the re-emergence of corporate and commercial banking and finance roles.

Also showing an upswing is demand for in-house roles focused on regulatory, governance and compliance. “Governance, risk and regulatory capability are areas that are consistently sought after,” she says.

It’s no surprise that the demand for property lawyers has been more subdued.

Legal recruitment practice CoLegal reports a similar pattern. Managing director Anand Ranchod says employment law has remained resilient, being considered a recession-proof area, while banking and finance, commercial litigation and construction law had all shown steady demand.
