Letter | False accusations were behind Santa Cruz City Council recall - Santa Cruz Sentinel

A recent letter writer was one to talk about “false political accusations” after the writer helped lead the baseless smear campaign that ended in the recall of two progressive City Council members, Chris Krohn and Drew Glover.

What were the consequences for that smear campaign? The HR investigation, which spent $18,000 of public money, found no evidence of the claims made by recallers – but it didn’t matter. After repeated speculative news stories by local media and some top-notch political theater by City Council and city staff, the lie was already spread. Once you’re lying this much, why hold yourself to any standard at all?

It probably wasn’t even necessary for recall campaigners to go to UCSC and dishonestly suggest that “Bernie Sanders supports the recall” (despite the fact that the local Santa Cruz For Bernie organization being a major opponent of the recall), but they went ahead and did it anyway.
