Dear Senator Wyden,
At this year’s National Whistleblower Day luncheon, you pledged to always have whistleblowers’ backs. That was not mere political rhetoric. Again and again, you have proven it is a reality. This letter is to express appreciation for your leadership protecting whistleblowers through legislation and casework, and in particular your congressional amicus advocacy to the Supreme Court. You have been a leader in drafting and obtaining passage of the legal burdens of proof that are the cornerstone of civil service, intelligence community, and corporate whistleblower rights. You monitor their impact in practice as Vice Chair of the Senate Whistleblower Caucus to close the gap between paper rights and reality.
All whistleblowers should be especially appreciative that you have defended their rights at the Supreme Court in bipartisan amicus briefs with Senator Grassley, the Whistleblower Caucus Chair. You have taken that step twice recently, for corporate workers in Murray v. UBS, and last month for federal employees in Farrington v. Department of Transportation.
For decades your leadership in creating, monitoring and defending whistleblower rights has changed the course of history for freedom of speech and government accountability to taxpayers. It is deeply appreciated by those of us on the front lines fighting for those same objectives.
