Letters to the Editor 11-21: Whistleblower protections, vet benefits and diversity - The Macomb Daily

Whistleblower protections do matter

Government corruption is always public enemy number one. It is what leads to mismanagement of funds, wrongful terminations, and ill-advised decisions that can impact all Americans. But we never know about the true extent of corruption until a brave person comes forward to report the wrongdoing they have seen.

That is why whistleblower protections are so important, particularly as it relates to our government and military. With the upcoming vote on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), we must put these protections into law and increase transparency surrounding government spending and waste.

I’m not alone in my anti-corruption stance, either. A recent survey by the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) shows a healthy majority of Michigan voters—89%—say corruption in government is a problem, including 61% who say it is a very big problem. These voters also listed protecting whistleblowers as one of the key tools in combatting government corruption.

The most encouraging result of these findings is that many Michigan voters support the anti-corruption measures that the federal government is considering enacting this year. I hope that our congressional leaders will join these voters and myself in championing reforms to reduce corruption and protect whistleblowers—they are key pillars of a healthy democracy.
