Liberia: New Drug Law to Protect Whistleblowers as Govt Burns US$37m Worth of Confiscated Narcotics - Front Page Africa

Monrovia Grand Bassa’s District Five lawmaker Thomas Goshua has promised the government will protect whistle-blowers who will offer information leading to the arrest of suspects linked to an estimated US$ 37 million narcotics busted at the Freeport of Monrovia last week.

“There are phases within the law that seek to protect whistle-blowers. The drug crime itself fights back,” the lawmaker said during Wednesday’s burning of the drugs at the Barclays Training Center in Monrovia.

He added: “We have to commend the security apparatus for job well done. However, we encourage them to be more vigilant as we strive for more logistics to make their work easier.”

Last week’s seizure of drugs was the second largest drug bust in Liberia’s history, after the seizure of an estimated US$ 100 million drugs in Monrovia last year following a tip-off by the US government.

Speaking Wednesday, the Director of the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA), Marcus Zehyou, declared his team was ready to make Liberia a drug-free country

“The LDEA has always been in the vanguard to make sure we clear harmful substances from the country. Quite recently in October, we confiscated an estimated US$100 million worth of cocaine. This is the second-largest confiscation of drugs in Liberia. It is a clear manifestation that we are ready to make Liberia a drug-free nation. Regarding this confiscation, there was no arrest,” he said.
