Los Angeles housekeepers seek wage hikes, enhanced security safeguards - LA Daily News

Dozens of Los Angeles housekeepers and other hotel workers delivered petitions to the City Clerk’s office Monday that call for pay hikes and increased safety measures to protect them from sexual assault and threatening conduct.

The employees – including non-union workers and others represented by Unite Here Local 11 – have worked since late January to gather the 61,000 signatures needed to qualify the Hotel Worker Protection Initiative for the November ballot.

They have secured more than 100,000 signatures for the initiative, the union said, which closely mirrors the protections hospitality workers have won in Long Beach, Santa Monica and West Hollywood.

“We hope they will just adopt the ordinance outright,” Unite Here spokeswoman Maria Hernandez said.

What the workers are seeking

– Panic buttons and other security measures to protect hotel housekeepers from sexual assault and threatening conduct- Fair compensation for heavy workloads- Restoration of daily room cleaning during the pandemic- Expansion of minimum wage law for hotel workers.

Hernandez said a minimum wage requirement exists for L.A. hotels with 50 or more rooms, but those with fewer rooms are not tied to that requirement. The initiative would expand the mandate to include facilities with fewer rooms.

“Some hotels are being built with 49 rooms just so they can avoid that,” she said.
