Scottish cricket must prove it is serious about tackling racism within the sport, the former national player Majid Haq has said after he was racially abused while umpiring a club game.
Haq — Scotland’s all-time leading wicket-taker — called the police after he was allegedly subjected to a racial slur while officiating a match at Greenock Cricket Club against Stenhousemuir.
A 63-year-old man has subsequently been charged “in connection with racial abuse” and is due to appear in court next month. Haq said he was “disgusted and horrified” by the event, and described it as “easily my lowest point being on a cricket field”.
