New standards are needed as Malta’s labour market has evolved, Prime Minister Robert Abela said as he announced that new rules clamping down on temporary work agencies are in the final stages of being drafted. According to The Malta Independent, Abela said in an interview that companies which operate on business models which depend on how many people it can import into the country, will not find the government supporting them. However, those companies which have prioritised in investing in the environment and in digitalisation will continue to find government support, Abela said, adding that the government will try and support these companies in various ways, ‘even where there are genuine human resources cases, as I understand you cannot grow your company without that’.
Abela said that the law as it currently stands, allows for anybody ‘to wake up one day and to start bringing people into the country’. “This will not be the case anymore with the new legislation,” Abela said, while adding that those which are correctly regulated can continue to operate. The prime minister also said that he has recently been receiving correspondence from agencies which had said that the future legislation is going to be ‘too rigid’.
