Manchester United takeover process has turned into a nightmare - Manchester Evening News

Rio Ferdinand said in mid-June that it might only be a 'matter of hours' before Manchester United were sold by the Glazers. Ferdinand confidently described a takeover from Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al Thani of Qatar as imminent and claimed that his information from 'a good source' was true, but four months later and remains in total control of the club.

Although Ferdinand wouldn't have intentionally got it wrong, his comments about a Qatari takeover being complete were objectively false.

Ferdinand will not be the last to make such claims. There have been hundreds of social media accounts suggesting a deal to buy United was imminent during the takeover process and they have benefited from that engagement.

In the era of misinformation, social media has become a dangerous place and fans who are desperate to hear positive news can fall into the trap of believing takeover 'updates' from accounts that have absolutely no merit.

The countless accounts claiming a takeover is imminent are shameless and you have to laugh at the regular use of the word 'imminent' over the last 11 months because if that was the case, the club would have been sold by now.

The obvious problem is the takeover process having no end in sight is not a laughing matter. The club will never return to its former glories with the Glazers as the custodians and fans are desperate for the American...
