Marin IJ Readers’ Forum for April 19, 2023 - Marin Independent Journal

It is time to pay Marin caregivers more money

Caregivers for low-income seniors and disabled residents make $16.95 per hour, yet my dog walker makes $30 an hour. How is it that people doing the extremely critical and difficult job of caring for people in need are paid so little? No one can live on $16.95 an hour in the Bay Area.

As a result of this very low wage, there is a significant caregiver workforce shortage in Marin. Caregivers cannot afford to live here and cannot afford to commute here either. Without caregivers, many people who need assistance with cooking, cleaning, shopping and other activities may experience a decline in their health. They have a higher risk of falls and of being sent to a nursing facility.

The Marin County Board of Supervisors should express its value of equity by prioritizing resources to in-home supportive services caregivers (many of whom are women of color) so that these essential workers and the people they care for can remain an integral part of our community. When caregivers make a true living wage, over $26 an hour for a single person in Marin, we will all benefit.
