Martin's Point Health Care to pay more than $22 million in alleged Medicare fraud settlement - WGME

PORTLAND (WGME) – Maine-based Martin's Point Health Care will have to pay millions to settle an alleged case of Medicare fraud.

The federal government says a whistleblower helped bring things to light.

The Department of Justice claims Martin's Point Health Care abused the federal Medicare Advantage program for more than three years.

The health care provider will now have to pay more than $22 million to settle those claims of fraud.

The DOJ says this all stems from a whistleblower lawsuit that was filed by a former Martin's Point manager in 2018.

That complaint alleged the company violated the False Claims Act by assigning additional diagnoses to patients in order to get higher reimbursements under the Medicare Advantage program.

Court documents claim the information Martin's Point submitted wasn't supported by medical records.

In a statement to CBS13, a Martin's Point spokesperson wrote:

“This settlement is not an admission of liability, it instead allows us to avoid the disruption, expense and uncertainty of litigation. This resolution allows us to put the past behind us, and we remain committed to our patients and members across our service regions."

None of the allegations in the case has to do with patient care or their claims.
