NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Meharry Medical College has agreed to pay more than $100,000 in a federal settlement over false Medicare claims, the U.S. Department of Justice says.
Federal prosecutors say the medical school submitted fraudulent claims to Medicare from 2016 to 2020. Meharry was seeking payment for physician services that were actually performed by unsupervised, non-physician residents. The DOJ says the services were provided in the internal medicine, OB/GYN, and psychiatric outpatient clinics. They were also provided for psychiatric consultations at Nashville General.
Meharry will pay $100,749 to resolve the allegations. The school is also ordered to implement a Medicare billing policy to ensure compliance—and they've agreed to provide annual Medicare billing training for faculty members and first-year residents.
