Meta’s Desperate Bid to Enter China
According to a whistleblower complaint filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Meta was eager to expand into China and was willing to go to great lengths to gain favour with Chinese authorities. Sarah Wynn-Williams, a former global policy director at Meta, alleges that the company secretly developed a censorship system in 2015 and agreed to let the Chinese government oversee social media content in the country.
The plan reportedly included hiring a “chief editor” who would have the power to remove content and even shut down Facebook in China during periods of political unrest. Meta executives allegedly misled investors and U.S. regulators about these efforts while privately negotiating with Chinese officials.
