Michigan governor's race gets weirder as Brandenburg, Carone enter race - Deadline Detroit

Mellissa Carone was blocked from running for the Michigan House earlier this year, for filing an incorrect affidavit of identity. Undeterred, she shifted to the state Senate, only to be disqualified for that race, for the same reason.

But this is America, where hope springs eternal and quitters never win and you can be anything you set your mind to. And so Carone is joining "constitutional conservative" Donna Brandenburg, who was disqualified from the once-crowded Republican gubernatorial field, and is now running for governor on the U.S. Taxpayers Party ticket. Carone is her lieutenant-governor designee.

If you think this is weird, you are absolutely not alone.

The Detroit News reports:

“This is going to be a moment where those who’ve in engaged in corrupt politics in Lansing might want to get out a box of Depends,” Brandenburg said in an interview streamed on Twitter. “Because we have a dynamic duo which will not back down.”

Brandenburg said the two-party system had failed the state “spectacularly” and said both she and Carone were “illegally” removed from the primary ballot. Even before a judge ruled on her removal from the GOP primary ballot, Brandenburg said she was ready to "tell them all to shove it."

The U.S. Taxpayers Party fielded a candidate in 2018, Todd Schleiger, who finished the race fourth, behind Gretchen Whitmer, Bill Schuette and Libertarian Bill Gelineau. Schleiger received 29,219, or .69 percent of the total.
