LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan House has put the state's "right to work" law on a fast track to removal.
The union-supported legislation, which would repeal the Gov. Rick Snyder-era law, is expected to come to a vote in a House committee and on the House floor on Wednesday, House Democrats spokeswoman Amber McCann said Tuesday. Right to work bars unions from requiring workers to pay union dues.
Representatives are also expected to vote on legislation that would reinstate Michigan's prevailing wage law, a Democratic priority that would mandate union-level wages be paid on all construction jobs funded by the state.
Right to work went into effect in Michigan in March 2013 and was seen as a signature policy of the Snyder administration and the Republican-led legislature of the time. Republicans hailed the law as a victory for workers.
Opponents of the policy have said it harms workers and stifles unions.
Legislative Democrats have held up a repeal of the Republican-sponsored labor laws as a priority for the first term where the party has had a majority in the Legislature in four decades.
