Milo Young ’26 JD won first place in the 2026 Dr. Emanuel Stein & Kenneth Stein Memorial Law Student Writing Competition, sponsored by the New York State Bar Association Labor & Employment Law Section, for his essay on the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). His essay addresses the NLRA’s 20th-century-based industrial workplace model that does not align with today’s globalized and service-oriented economy.
“Enacted in 1935, the NLRA was built with the 1930s economy in mind. It goes without saying that today’s workplaces, workforces, and business practices are all very different. And, yet, the Act has not been amended since 1974 to bring health care institutions under the coverage of the Act,” Young said. “Drawing on my background and long-standing interest in labor relations, my article explored the growing disconnect between traditional labor law and modern organizing tactics, and argued for a thoughtful modernization of the NLRA.”
As part of the award, Young was invited to attend the New York State Bar Association Annual Meeting this winter in New York City, where he presented his paper at the Labor & Employment Luncheon.
Young said he was inspired to write about the topic based on class discussions that took place in Fordham Law Professor James J. Brudney’s Labor Law class this academic year. Brudney, the Joseph Crowley Chair in Labor and Employment Law, also teaches International Labor Law, Employment Law, and Legislation & Regulation.
