Minimum wage in Louisiana; what workers should know - KALB

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Louisiana is one of only a few states without its own minimum wage law. That means workers rely on the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, which has not changed since 2009.

Attempts to raise the minimum wage in Louisiana have repeatedly failed in the state legislature. Business groups argue higher wages would hurt small employers, while supporters say increases are necessary to keep pace with rising living costs.

Workers covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) are guaranteed at least $7.25 per hour. Tipped employees may be paid as little as $2.13 per hour, as long as tips bring their total pay to at least the federal minimum.

Neighboring states vary. Arkansas has a state minimum wage of $12.00 per hour, while Texas also follows the federal rate of $7.25. Mississippi, like Louisiana, has no state minimum.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission provides resources on wage laws, workplace rights, and how to file complaints.
