Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress President Mira Borthakur on Monday mounted a strong critique of the BJP-led Centre, accusing it of misleading the public over the implementation of the Women’s Reservation law.
Speaking at a press briefing in Guwahati, Mira Borthakur alleged that the BJP was trying to project the opposition as anti-women while diverting attention from delays in implementing the bill passed in 2023. She questioned why the legislation has not yet been enforced and criticised the Centre for linking it with delimitation based on the 2011 Census.
Using sharp political imagery, she remarked that the BJP’s approach resembles “a snake that bites and then pretends to cure,” suggesting that voters are no longer convinced by such tactics.
The Congress leader reiterated her party’s position in favour of immediate enforcement of 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures, without attaching additional preconditions. She also claimed that Congress has consistently demonstrated greater commitment to women’s political participation by fielding more female candidates in elections compared to the BJP.
Borthakur further raised concerns over women’s safety and rights, alleging a gap between the BJP’s public messaging and ground realities. Referring to statements made by senior Congress figures such as Rahul Gandhi, Gaurav Gogoi and Priyanka Gandhi, she said the Opposition remains willing to move forward with the legislation based on the present composition of Parliament.
