Along with the start of a new year, January 1 saw a change in the State of Missouri’s minimum wage. Missouri’s minimum wage increased by 85 cents starting on Sunday January 1, 2023 to $12 per hour. This is up from $11.15 per hour in 2022. According to statewide coalition Missouri Jobs for Justice, that change will result in more than 363,000 Missourians directly getting a raise at the start of the new year. “As Missourians, we work hard for our families and our communities. We have shown that when we unite to improve our state’s economic policies, we all benefit,” said Caitlyn Adams, Executive Director of Missouri Jobs with Justice, in a statement.
The 85-cent increase is the final increase as part of Proposition B. In 2018, Missourians put Proposition B on the ballot to raise the minimum wage. Voters approved a phased-in plan for raising the minimum wage from $7.85 with 62% support statewide. It was the first time the minimum wage was increased since 2006, which was also a voter-approved raise. Missouri’s minimum wage has increased by $4.35 per hour over the last 7 years, from $7.65 in 2016 to the current $12 per hour.
Employers engaged in retail or service businesses whose annual gross income is less than $500,000 are not required to pay the state minimum wage rate. Employers not subject to the minimum wage law can pay employees wages of their choosing.
