Longtime Montclair CFO Padmaja Rao is leaving the township’s employ, Mayor Renee Baskerville confirmed on Monday. Piscataway’s Township Council approved her appointment to CFO and finance director last week.
Baskerville credited Rao with steering the township through fiscal challenges, including the recession of 2008.
“She guided us through that and other things with unwavering brilliance, and I’m just so grateful for the foundation and financial stewardship that she laid for us here,” Baskerville said.
Appointment Approved
Piscataway’s town council on May 6 appointed Rao with a start date of July 1, according to the meeting video and agenda. Their prior CFO retired, officials said.
In 2024, Rao settled a lawsuit with Montclair Township in which she claimed the former town manager retaliated against her after she blew the whistle on Montclair town council members receiving full-time health benefits, even though their role is part time. She also called out and time records fraud in the Montclair Fire Department, according to the suit.
“Even when she was confronted with some challenging situations of her own, she maintained integrity and professionalism,” Baskerville said.
Rao has served as Montclair’s CFO for nearly 10 years and before that worked at the state Department of Community affairs, according to her LinkedIn profile. Rao did not return requests for comment on Monday. A spokesperson for the township declined to confirm her departure.
