MOORESVILLE, N.C. (WBTV) - Mooresville Mayor Chris Carney is facing allegations from police whistleblowers about a traffic stop that he denies ever happened.
The North Carolina Police Benevolent Association emailed Mooresville Town Manager Tracey Jerome and Police Chief Ron Campurciani claiming they “have received information about possible employee retaliation for whistleblowing concerning Mayor Carney and a traffic stop.”
When questioned about the alleged traffic stop by a WBTV reporter, Mayor Carney denied ever being pulled over by police.
“I’ve lived here since ’97. I’ve never been pulled over by a police officer, not one time in all those years,” Mayor Carney told a WBTV reporter.
Brandon McGaha of the North Carolina Police Benevolent Association, which represents 17,000 officers, said they were contacted by officers about the incident.
“The traffic stop between the chief, and the mayor actually took place on January 30th of 2024 at about 11:23 p.m.,” McGaha said referencing information given to him by his members.
“And this traffic stop took place in the area of Williamson Road near Joann Lane,” McGaha said.

Police Chief Ron Campurciani acknowledged an encounter with the mayor that night but disputed it was a traffic stop. He said both had attended a fundraiser for Sarah Kirkman, who was running for district attorney.
