Motel 6 Denied Washington Employees Proper Breaks, Class Action ... - ClassAction.org

A proposed class action claims the operators of Motel 6 have failed to provide hotel employees in Washington with proper meal and rest breaks or compensation for missed breaks.

According to the 10-page case, Washington law entitles hourly-paid, non-exempt employees to a 30-minute meal break during shifts lasting longer than five hours and a 10-minute rest break for every four hours worked. The plaintiff, a Washington resident who worked as a Motel 6 front desk representative and night auditor in 2020 and 2021, accuses Motel 6 Operating, L.P., G6 Hospitality Property, LLC and iQon Hospitality, LLP of systematically violating the rights of Motel 6 employees under this state wage and hour law.

Specifically, the plaintiff claims that she and other similarly situated employees regularly had to work through their meal and rest breaks because the defendants’ hotels were “understaffed and busy.” Oftentimes, the plaintiff could not clock out during her eight- to 10-hour shifts since she was the only employee present to assist customers, the case contends.

The lawsuit alleges that the Motel 6 defendants had “no policy or practice” to schedule meal or rest periods for employees. The hotel operators also had no procedure to allow employees to record their missed breaks and did not pay them paid proper wages in lieu of rest and meal breaks, the suit claims.
