Mount Vernon mayor responds to local newspaper article - Knox Pages

Editor’s Note: This article was updated at 2:28 p.m. on Oct. 16, 2023, to reflect that the Mount Vernon News printed Mayor Starr’s Letter to the Editor. The News also published a response.

MOUNT VERNON — At the Oct. 9 city council meeting, Mount Vernon Mayor Matt Starr addressed an online article relating to the city’s support of the Sustainable 2050 program.

The article appeared on the Mount Vernon News website on Oct. 4. Starr told council members that the article’s claims were untruthful.

He also said it mischaracterized council’s vote to support the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission’s Sustainable 2050 program.

On Oct. 11, Starr submitted a Letter to the Editor of the News. In a telephone conversation with the News‘ owner on Oct. 12, Starr again requested the paper print the letter. According to the mayor, the owner agreed.

The article in question appeared in the Oct. 14 print edition of the Mount Vernon News. It also remains on its website.

As of 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 16, the newspaper has not yet printed Starr’s letter. It is printed below.

On Oct. 4, 2023, The Mount Vernon News published an anonymous article — headlined “Mount Vernon City Council passes resolution promising to “pursue” the replacement of natural gas and coal with solar power” — that completely mischaracterizes the subject at hand.
