Multiple North, South Carolina residents arrested in alleged healthcare fraud bust - WBTV

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - As part of a nationwide crackdown, multiple North and South Carolina residents were arrested on federal charges relating to healthcare fraud.

The announcement was made on June 30 when the attorneys general of North and South Carolina, the FBI, the IRS’s Criminal Investigation representatives, and the Department of Health and Human Services met in Charlotte.

Nationally, 324 people were charged, but locally, nine people were arrested after allegedly conspiring to defund Medicaid programs in the Carolinas by buying and selling the information of Medicaid beneficiaries. Then, the accused allegedly turned in reimbursement claims for patients who never received services.

The seven people charged with conspiracy to commit health care fraud and to pay and receive illegal kickbacks are:

  • Donald Calvin Saunders, 62, of Charlotte. Saunders was also charged with six counts of health care fraud; one count of unlawful purchase of beneficiary identification numbers; one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering; and three counts of money laundering.
  • Vanessa Ragin-Boatright, 59, of Manning, S.C. Boatright was also facing two counts of health care fraud; one count of unlawful purchase of beneficiary identification numbers; and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.
  • Dajuan Strickland, 47, of Charlotte and Buffalo, NY. Strickland was also charged with three counts of health care fraud; two counts of unlawful purchase of beneficiary identification...
