Nashville police whistleblower indicted for allegedly stealing and leaking documents - Chattanooga Times Free Press

The former Metro Nashville Police Department lieutenant who went public as a whistleblower against the department last year was arrested Tuesday on two criminal indictments accusing him of illegally accessing and taking internal files and other documents.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced the arrest of Garet Davidson on Tuesday and said the charges followed an investigation by the agency, requested by Davidson County District Attorney Glenn Funk, into allegations of misconduct against him. Davidson was jailed in Nashville on a $150,000 bond.

The former insider, who retired from the department in January 2024, set off a firestorm last year when he filed a 61-page complaint alleging widespread misconduct inside the police department and accused high-ranking officials of working with Republican state lawmakers to gut police oversight boards. Later, a court filing in the case over leaked documents related to the 2023 Covenant School shooting included a declaration from an MNPD lieutenant pointing the finger at Davidson as the potential source. Davidson's Portland, Tennessee, home was raided by TBI agents in November, and speculation abounded after the revelation that the agency had also executed a search warrant at the law firm hired by Metro to investigate Davidson's complaint.
