One of the wildest claims to come out of the NBA's turbulent Thursday came from veteran ESPN reporter Brian Windhorst. A day later, both the NBA and Windhorst shot down the report.
The report in question concerned Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, who was arrested Thursday in connection to an FBI investigation into an alleged sports gambling scheme. In Rozier's case, the issue is his early exit from a game in 2023, when he was playing for the Charlotte Hornets, due to a foot injury after his alleged partners placed more than $200,000 on his under prop bets.
The NBA investigated the matter earlier this year and ended up clearing the guard to play, while the federal investigation continued and came to a head Thursday.
The same day as Rozier's arrest, Windhorst appeared on "The Rich Eisen Show" and alleged that the league "pulled" Rozier, taken to mean quietly sidelining him, after the betting activity was flagged. Rozier didn't play for the rest of the season, with the Hornets citing a foot injury at the time.
Windhorst's recollection:
“The sportsbooks caught [the irregular betting]. They told the NBA right away. And guess what? The NBA — Rozier didn’t play the rest of the season. And he had faked the injury, so it wasn’t because of the injury. The NBA pulled him.
