Sacramento County is sending out an alert about a new wave of fraud attempts that officials with the Employment Development Department said they are seeing.
KCRA 3 Investigates has spent the past year digging into widespread fraud involving state unemployment benefits as part of the documentary "Easy Money."
Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert joined KCRA 3 on Monday to talk about how criminals are now targeting businesses and individuals by filing false disability insurance claims.
She said that EDD is adding new verification systems and people can report identity theft cases to the department online.
Tell us about the new scam?
Schubert: “It actually came to my attention because some folks that I know received some letters. It was more than one person and it appeared that some of these thieves are tying to target businesses as well as private individuals. So I reached out to EDD and in fact they have seen a recent, significant increase in types of scams. This is identity theft so people are stealing people’s identity and then trying to register. There’s been no breach at EDD. What it is is people stealing identities then going on and trying to create accounts. It is another mechanism that thieves are trying to do an end run around the system to rip off taxpayers.”
How big a problem would you say this is?
