NFL Reporter Trotter Settles Retaliation Lawsuit With League - Sportico
Former NFL Media reporter Jim Trotter has reached an out-of-court settlement with the NFL, the journalist announced via X on Monday. Trotter sued the NFL last year for employment discrimination. In May, U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff advanced Trotter’s retaliation claim under Section 1981 of the Civil Rights Act of 1866 while dismissing five other claims.
The settlement will require approval by Rakoff. Trotter, an award-winning reporter, a former president of Pro Football Writers of America and author of the book Junior Seau: The Life and Death of a Football Icon, wrote on X that the settlement’s terms include his creation of a scholarship foundation for journalism students at historically black colleges and universities. The NFL will donate to the foundation, which is called the Work, Plan, Pray Foundation.
“I’m thrilled that I now have the opportunity to make a real impact in assisting the next generation of HBCU students seeking careers in sports journalism and sports management,” Trotter shared in an emailed statement. “Making a difference that could lead to positive change and greater minority representation was always the overriding goal.”
Trotter worked for the league-owned media arm NFL Media from 2018 to 2023 and is now a columnist for The Athletic. He argued the NFL declined to extend his employment contract in retaliation for him challenging the league about race discrimination and lack of diversity.
