NINEVEH — Police in Al-Nasr district said Sunday they arrested a woman caught in the act of receiving $3,000 after allegedly extorting a citizen in Nineveh by falsely claiming ties to influential officials.
In a statement, the police said, “A joint task force from the Al-Nasr Police Department and the Al-Nasr Intelligence and Counterterrorism Division, acting on judicial orders and after collecting information and conducting surveillance, managed to arrest the suspect in the act while receiving $3,000 in exchange for extorting a citizen.”
The statement said the woman “claimed to have connections with influential figures and government officials and to hold a PhD degree,” adding that she “used the names of officials to blackmail citizens and commit fraud.”
Authorities said legal procedures have been initiated, and the suspect has been detained under Decision 160 of 1983.
