The story of Carlos Ghosn’s sacking, imprisonment and escape in an instrument case is one of the most dramatic in modern corporate history. But when they make the movie of the Nissan scandal, Ravinder Passi deserves more than a bit part.
The son of first-generation immigrants in a working-class area in Leicester, Passi was raised by his mother, but battled his way through school, university and the corporate world to win one of the most senior legal jobs going — the general counsel of cars giant Nissan.
It was a rare feat for a non-Japanese in this most traditional of corporate environments, and he lived well in the city of Yokohama.
But it was all to go wrong one day in May 2020.
