N.J. used his company to make false claims about pesticides killing coronavirus, officials say - NJ.com

A Camden County man and his company were charged with allegedly selling pesticides while falsely claiming they could kill the coronavirus, authorities said.

James Young, 46, of Cherry Hill, along with his company, Philadelphia-based ViaClean Technologies, LLC, violated the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act by knowingly misleading customers, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Philadelphia.

The defendants made false claims about the efficacy of pesticides that typically stop the growth of bacteria, fungi and algae, authorities said.

They are also charged with misdemeanor violations for selling the pesticide products by making claims that differed from the approved master labels for the products, officials said.

Young and employee Sean Storrie, 59, of Philadelphia, made their initial appearances in federal magistrate court in Philadelphia on Thursday, according to a news release. ViaClean Technologies, LLC, will have its first appearance on Sept. 5.

The case was investigated by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Criminal Investigation Division and the United States Postal Inspection Service.
