SINGAPORE – Patrons can be assured that they would not face fines if they “chope” or reserve seats at hawker centres, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said on April 9.
The agency posted a statement on Facebook in response to recent messages circulating on social media claiming there would be penalties for those who do so.
“These claims are false. No ‘chope-free’ zones either,” said NEA.
One such Facebook post seen by The Straits Times claims that NEA will be introducing these zones at selected hawker centres, which will see diners caught trying to “chope” seats with tissue packets, umbrellas or office lanyards having their items confiscated.
The post also stated that diners will have to pay a $2 “release fee” to get their items back from a “Lost & Found” collection point, while repeat offenders would be required to stand and eat as part of an “etiquette correction” initiative.
In its post, NEA reminded the public to be considerate while dining at hawker centres.
“This helps ensure a pleasant dining experience for all,” it said.
