Norwalk Hospital food service employees file to unionize: 'among ... - Thehour.com

NORWALK — Around 65 food service employees at Norwalk Hospital, subcontracted through Morrison Healthcare, are looking to unionize.

Connecticut Healthcare Associate District 1199 within the National Union of Hospital and Healthcare Employees, filed the petition to unionize with the National Labor Relations Board on behalf of the employees that work for Morrison, which is owned by Compass One Healthcare.

Andrea Rynn, spokeswoman at Nuvance Health, which runs Norwalk Hospital, deferred to Morrison Healthcare for comment. Morrison Healthcare did not respond to requests for comment on Monday. Morrison’s website describes the company as a “foodservice company specialized in healthcare.”

According to Dave Hannon, the president of CHCA District 1199, the employees seek to unionize based on low wages, covering shifts in positions for which they weren’t hired, and lack of training and time off.

Food service employees are earning around $15 hourly, the state minimum wage. Hannon said they are “among the lowest paid” in the hospital.

He said that different positions within food service at the hospital are paid at different rates, as well, and when employees cover different jobs than the ones for which they were hired, they are not paid at corresponding rates.

He also said that employees, who are contracted at-will, do not get as many days off as they used to.
