How much you make has a big impact on how you live your life. Getting low-balled at one job could determine your salary for years to come.
“I actually work for Tesla. I’m a maintenance tech and I make around $20.50 an hour,” said Trezhon Powell.
“Actually I’m a stay-at-home mom. I don’t make anything,” said Taylor Hecke.
“I am the executive director of the campaign for Greater Buffalo History, Architecture, and Culture, a preservation organization," said Tim Tielman. "The typical salary range in our profession is anywhere from $40,000 to about $80,000.”
They’re answers that aren't often offered up.
“Does that question about wage make you uncomfortable,” asked Spectrum News 1 Buffalo.
“Certainly does,” said Tielman. “It’s one of those…Geez, you can talk about just about anything in America, except wage and compensation, because it’s so attached to people’s perception of how they are perceived.”
So if you find out there’s a disparity, it can hurt.
“I decided to seek other employment really because it’s just unfair, it really is unfair that someone who doesn’t have as good [of] qualifications as me gets a job that’s higher paying,” explained Hecke.
According to the census, in 2019, New York State had a pay gap of about $8,000 per year between men and women.
