Oklahoma leaders warn political misinformation threatens public safety - News 9

Oklahoma lawmakers on Your Vote Counts warned that false political claims and unchecked social media rhetoric are eroding public trust and could endanger both state workers and children.

OKLAHOMA CITY -

State Senator Paul Rosino and former Representative Jason Dunnington joined Scott Mitchell on Your Vote Counts this week to discuss the fallout from recent political behavior, saying false statements and online attacks are deepening public distrust and putting people at risk.

Erosion of trust in state leadership

Dunnington said that political misconduct and inflammatory social media use are contributing to record-low public confidence in elected officials.

“Whether it's allegations of ethics issues or it's using one's social media platform in order to spin people up, these are the kinds of things that continue to break down trust,” Dunnington said. “Those of them, the vast majority of them, that are there for the right reasons, trying to get stuff done for our state, for our citizens, make their job even more difficult because no one trusts the end result.”

False claims and public harm

Rosino said some of the rhetoric now circulating online falsely accuses state agencies of “kidnapping” children.

“There are some things being said about state agencies taking and kidnapping kids, medical kidnapping, all those things,” Rosino said. “It's so untrue and it's unfair. It's unfair to the kids in the future who may need this assistance. and it's unfair to the people like me who...
