Suchir Balaji, who flagged ethical concerns regarding OpenAI’s practices, was found dead in his San Francisco apartment on November 26 of last year. While the authorities initially classified his death as a suicide, his parents vehemently maintained that he had been murdered. They hired private investigators and filed a lawsuit against the police on January 31, demanding full access to the investigation report. However, the final autopsy report, released on Friday, officially ruled out foul play.
According to Fortune, the San Francisco police and medical examiners jointly issued a four-page statement, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) released a comprehensive 13-page report that confirmed Balaji’s death was a suicide.
“The OCME found no evidence or information to establish a cause and manner of death for Balaji other than a suicide by self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head," read the medical examiner’s report.
It added, “SFPD conducted an independent investigation and based on the information SFPD reviewed, there is insufficient evidence to find Balaji’s death was the result of a homicide."
