On January 4th, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) released a report containing the findings of a recent investigation into American Airlines. The investigation concluded that the company had unlawfully retaliated against flight attendants who reported work-related illnesses. OSHA has given the airline 15 business days to contest the findings.
Investigation results
The investigation was launched on August 2nd following reports from an internal whistleblower. During the investigation, OSHA reportedly discovered reports that the airline had retaliated against flight attendants that issued complaints to the airline and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). According to OSHA's findings, American Airlines docked the attendance points of these select flight attendants. It also discouraged them from reporting work-related illnesses or injuries.
Specifically, the flight attendants being retaliated against were on select flights this year when fumes or the smell of fumes was reported inside the airplane cabin. These flight attendants reported feeling sick following the incident. The whistleblower involved in this investigation is under federal protection under OSHA's Whistleblower Protection Program, meaning that the organization will not disclose their identity to avoid internal retaliation from American Airlines management.
