Pennsylvania lawmaker raises are biggest since 1995 - The Morning Call

Everything costs more these days, from gas to groceries. I paid $17 for 10 hot wings recently.

With Christmas approaching, people could end up with a larger tab than usual when their credit card bills arrive in January.

They already take home the third-highest pay of any Legislature in the nation. And in a few weeks, their paychecks will be even more bloated.

On Dec. 1, legislators will receive raises of 5.6%, under a state law that automatically hikes their pay based on the Consumer Price Index.

The salary for most lawmakers will increase to more than $95,000. Leaders will make more, with House Speaker Bryan Cutler and Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman raking in nearly $149,000, The Associated Press reported.

In addition to lawmakers, the law provides automatic cost-of-living raises for the governor, lieutenant governor, Cabinet members, attorney general, auditor general, treasurer, and state and county judges. That’s more than 1,300 people.

Lawmakers sure took care of themselves in 1995 when they passed the law providing for these raises. In 1995, lawmakers earned $47,000. So their pay has about doubled since then. This year’s increase is the largest percentage increase since the legislation passed, according to the AP.

Last year, amid the pandemic, the Legislature passed and the governor signed a law blocking the automatic raises. They said it would have been inappropriate to accept more taxpayer money when so many taxpayers were suffering.
