Lee Soo-jung, the head of the Suwon Jeong Party Cooperation Committee of the People Power Party (a Kyunggi University professor), was fined 3,000,000 Korean won on the 5th for allegedly posting false information on her social media before the last presidential election claiming, “President Lee Jae Myung (then Democratic Party of Korea presidential candidate) and his two sons received military exemptions.”
Suwon District Court’s Criminal Division 13 (Judge Jang Seok-jun presiding) ruled on the same day that Lee was guilty of violating the Public Official Election Act, publication of false facts, and the Information and Communications Network Act, defamation, stating, “Unintentional intent is recognized,” and imposed the fine. Earlier, the prosecution had demanded a fine of 5,000,000 Korean won. If a fine of 1,000,000 Korean won or more is confirmed in an election law violation case, the person loses eligibility to run for office for five years, making it impossible to run for elected positions such as National Assembly member.
Lee was accused of posting on her Facebook account on May 28 of last year, ahead of the 21st presidential election, “Candidate Lee and his two sons all received military exemptions,” thereby publicizing false information and damaging the reputation of President Lee and his children.
