Lee Soo-jung, the People Power Party Suwon-jeong district committee chair who was fined in the first trial for allegedly posting a false statement on social media about the military service of President Lee Jae-myung's children during the 21st presidential election, appealed the verdict.
According to legal sources on the 10th, the committee chair's legal representative filed a notice of appeal that day with the Suwon District Court Criminal Division 13 (Chief Judge Jang Seok-jun).
Earlier, the court fined the committee chair 3 million won on charges of announcing false information and slandering a candidate under the Public Official Election Act and defamation under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection.
If a fine of 1 million won or more becomes final in a case under the Public Official Election Act, eligibility to run for office is restricted, and the person cannot be a candidate for the next five years.
The first-instance court said, "Even if the defendant deleted the post in a short time, considering the reach of the internet, there is a substantial concern that it would hinder voters' rational judgment, so the culpability cannot be considered light," adding, "There was neither a settlement with the victim nor forgiveness," in explaining the sentencing.
