HAWARDEN—The Hawarden Police Department can look forward to raises thanks to a narrow vote at the July 26 city council meeting.
In a 3-2 vote, the city will spend an additional $42,991 on police wages, an increase from $312,769 to $355,760. City councilors Monte Harvey and Patty Anderson voted against the resolution.
The approved resolution called for an $83,655 yearly salary for police chief Corey Utech, $33 per hour wages for sergeants, $30.53 per hour wages for certified officers, $28 per hour for uncertified officers and $23 per hour for part-time officers.
In fiscal year 2022-23, the police chief role came with a $77,728 salary, $28.02 per hour for sergeants, $26.53 per hour for certified officers, $24 per hour for uncertified officers and $20 per hour for part-time officers.
The final resolution is a decrease from what was proposed during discussion at the July 12 meeting. That proposal had requested a $89,766 increase in salary and wage spending throughout the department, which broke down to a $110,000 salary for the police chief, $35 per hour for sergeants, $33 per hour for certified officers, $30 per hour for uncertified officers and $25 per hour for part-time officers.
During the July 12 meeting, Utech said the police department has three vacant positions he’s been trying to fill. There are four full-time officers remaining on staff including Utech.
