The police have launched an investigation into Park Chulmin, a former member of the Seongnam Gukje Mafia, who raised allegations of President Lee Jaemyung’s ties to organized crime.
According to the police on April 25, the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency is investigating Park on charges of making a false accusation against President Lee.
Previously, ahead of the 2021 presidential election, Park filed a complaint with the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office, claiming that then-Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee, Lee Junseok (the former CEO of Komatrade and a businessman also linked to the Seongnam Gukje Mafia), and Kim (the main perpetrator of the Pattaya murder case) were closely connected.
The Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office transferred the case to the Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency, and the police concluded that Park’s allegations were unfounded.
Attorney Jang Youngha, who, along with Park, raised suspicions about President Lee’s ties to organized crime, was sentenced by the Supreme Court on March 12 to one year in prison, suspended for two years, for spreading false information under the Public Official Election Act.
Attorney Jang had claimed at press conferences and elsewhere, based on Park’s statements, that President Lee received about 2 billion won from the Seongnam Gukje Mafia group in exchange for business favors.
